Become a Hospice Volunteer

“I went into volunteering with Hospice wanting to make a difference for others in need. What I found was that this very rewarding work transforms more lives than the people we serve - I have ultimately received so much more than I could ever give as a Talbot Hospice volunteer.”

“While recently visiting a homebound patient and giving his caregiver a much needed break, I realized just how fortunate I am. To be able to help this family - knowing I made someone’s day a little brighter while lightening someone’s workload - is truly one of the most rewarding privileges of being aTalbot Hospice volunteer.”

Working with patients…
Our volunteers are on the front line of Talbot Hospice’s mission to provide direct care to patients and families facing life’s final journey.

The rewards…
The rewards for being a Hospice volunteer can be seen in the warm hugs, open hearts, and bright smiles of the patients. It is noted by family caregivers who appreciate having help with end-of-life challenges.

When the patient can no longer reach out to others, the volunteer arrives to help. By participating in this intimate personal experience, the volunteer is transformed. The greatest reward of all is helping someone who can never repay you. That is a true act of selfless love.

Appreciation events are held for volunteers throughout the year, including; a May Luncheon, a Fall Family Crab Feast, a Winter-Holiday Wassail Party, and a Spring Bus Trip.

Behind the scenes…
Talbot Hospice staff are supported by volunteers, who help with administrative work, cooking, running errands, data entry, scheduling…all the day-to-day activities that keep the organization running smoothly and efficiently.

Volunteers also provide professional services; lawn care, painting, repairs, and general maintenance. Check Job Descriptions or contact the Volunteer Coordinator for more information.

In fiscal year 2009, volunteers donated 13,918 hours, a value of $281,840! This saved the organization a significant amount of budget dollars, which enabled hospice services to be provided at no charge.

Talbot Hospice Volunteers, Sheila Monahan, Gordon Ries and Emilie Joshi are members of a Volunteer Advisory Panel which assists volunteers in their roles at Talbot Hospice. They spoke at a recent event for the professional medical community on the rewards of being a volunteer.

Graduates of Volunteer Training 2010

Talbot Hospice’s Volunteer Training Class is a comprehensive 18--hour program addressing a variety of end-of-life issues including: hospice philosophy and care, fears and attitudes about death, spirituality, grief, listening skills, setting boundaries, family dynamics, the funeral process and job specifics. An additional 6-hour class teaches personal care skills. The training program is designed to prepare volunteers to work directly with patients, as caregivers in the Guest Wing or companions at home.

Training and support is an ongoing process with in-services offered on a monthly basis. These educational events are open to all volunteers. Direct care volunteers are required to complete at least one annual in-service. Topics are wide-ranging from nutrition at the end-of-life, advance directives, meditation to refresher classes for Guest Wing caregivers.
